It Couldn’t Be Easier To Start!

It’s only $10 to reserve your spot and then $59 the day of the event if you decide to participate in the rest of the 6 week sprint. We are confident that you’ll say “I like it, I love it and want more of it!”

The bootcamp kick off event for the fitness sprint is Monday September 19th at 7:00 pm.

The following classes will be available to you for the fitness sprint.

There will be weekly weigh ins, fitness and nutrition tips and a fitness assessment at the start and finish of the sprint.

 

Who is the 6 Week Fitness Sprint for?

Any fitness level can participate in this challenge. Our trainers will modify YOUR program to YOUR specific needs, even if you have prior injuries. We work with clients from 10 years old to 80 years old, marathon runners and yogis, pregnant or post-partum, people with 10 lbs to lose and people with 100 lbs to lose. This challenge is the best place for you to be.

What will be required of me?

During the challenge you are encouraged to workout 3-5 times a week, plus any additional workouts we give you, following our nutrition guidelines and taking before & after photos.

I don’t have a lot of weight to lose, should I still try it?

Absolutely! Some participate to improve their overall cardiovascular condition or strength rather than to lose weight. Some only have their last 10 or 20 pounds to lose and just want the guidance, extra accountability and camaraderie to get them to their goals.

Don’t let electronic games and gadgets occupy your child this summer when they could be building their minds and bodies at Balance Martial Arts  summer camp! Balance Martial Arts offers a variety of programs for children of all ages and ability levels with specialized programs for beginners.  Our summer camps are taught by certified black belt instructors with over 20 years of teaching experience.  Your children will be challenged and well-supervised by our professional staff.   Beginners and experienced karate students alike will benefit from the lessons taught, and have a blast in the process! Ages 5 – 14 welcome.

If you are looking for a unforgettable, fun experience for your child – this is the camp for you! A special theme makes each week of camp unique; every day is packed with fun activities and outings for our campers.

Full Day: 9:30 – 4:30

Week One – Hero Camp  

June 12th – 16th

Train like a super hero!  Go on missions to save the dojo.  Put your skills to the test!

Learn things like “Hulk Smash” and create your own costume to deflect strikes like Iron Man and Captain America.

Activities will include karate classes every day, super hero rescue missions,

AND, we will be creating our own Super Hero Costumes that students can keep!

Week Two – Demo Team Camp!  

 June 19th – 23rd

Students will learn how to understand the key tools for developing the proper physical and

mental attitudes that provide a solid foundation for building long term confidence. We will learn

to overcome fears, and take on challenging experiences to help create better performers!

Activities will include karate classes, gymnastics coaching, art time developing our logo, and team names,

as well as creating, and performing a special high energy demo for parents at the end of the week!

Week Three – Star Wars Jedi Training  

July 10th – 14th

Prepare for the ultimate summer camp adventure at Jedi Training Camp!

Students will learn how to use a “light Saber” and then complete challenges to earn

true Jedi Status!  This was our most popular camp last year, and it’s back!

We will spend time working on Light Saber training with traditional bokken techniques, that include

strikes, blocks, and disarms!  This camp will be fun for every age, and participants will be able

to build their own light sabers to take home!


Week 4 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’s Extreme Weapons Camp

August 7th – 11th

Nunchucks, Kamas, Bo Staff, Escrima Sticks, and even Sword training!!  Everyone will get the chance to learn

how to use their favorite weapon, and build an epic battle scene at the end of the week to show off for parents!!

We will have special weapons themed classes, and everyone will have the chance to create, and decorate their

own (safe) weapons to use during classes.  Every child will have the opportunity to create, and perform a weapons form at the end of the week!


Week 5 – Summer Olympics

August 14th – 18th

Finish out the summer with a week filled with fun competitions, and challenges.  Participants will be able to earn

medals by competing against each other, and camp counselors!  Pushups, Situps, Sprinting, Jumping, and

Time Challenges will be just a few of the events!!

Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals will be awarded to the winners of each event!

Jiu-Jitsu: All Levels (GI)

Class Monday, Tuesday, from 7:45pm-9pm.  Wednesday at 7:00pm  New AM and Lunch Time Classes at 6:00 AM, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  Noon classes on Wednesday, and Friday.  This class is for both beginners and advanced students. Techniques will follow the BJJ curriculum in order so students can progress at their consistent pace, whether beginner or advanced.

 Classes will cover self defense and fundamentals for new or young progressing students. Students will follow the BJJ Curriculum and have chances to earn promotional stripes.

Fitness
Participating in healthy, vigorous physical activity helps combats the dangerous trend of childhood obesity and resulting diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Regular sports provide relief on a seasonal basis (baseball, football, and hockey). Martial arts, on the other hand, is a year-round, healthy fitness commitment which provides a full-body workout, strength, flexibility and muscle building exercises to keep teens healthy and prepared to succeed in school and at home. With nearly 5% of American children categorized as “severely obese”, they need all the support possible.

Stress Management
Teens face stress from school, home, work, and society in general. The American Psychological Association (APA) conducted a 2012 study called “Stress in America” which concluded that stress is of great concern to teenagers. In fact, the APA found that 42% of teens developed stress-induced headaches. Building strong relationships can help combat stress. Through organized martial arts classes, students build lifetime relationships with their peers and their instructors which provides respite for them when they are emotionally drained. Through the discipline that the curriculum requires, martial artists learn to apply positive tenets and codes to their lives, and to the service of others less fortunate than they are. In fact, teens with troubled lives who begin martial arts training and commit to the work often find themselves looking at life challenges as opportunities, rather than tragedies. They become more resilient, and therefore better able to face stressors of everyday life. Socialization Skills
Cliques rule – they rule local governments, corporate boardrooms, high schools and middle schools. In fact, the power of adolescent cliques contributes to the frequency of bullying in modern teen society. Bullying is applied physically or mentally to demean or otherwise damage a person. There is an urgent need to prevent physical and mental damage caused by this type of abuse. Often providing anti-bullying programs, martial arts schools provide safe environments in which all types of people interact. The philosophies upon which traditional martial arts systems are based forbids practitioners to be biased against any individual, to mistreat any person or group, or to exclude classmates from participation in any in-school or outside-school activity. Inclusion is the key. Learning how to include others and how to be included is a by-product of the discipline and character-building curriculums present in good martial arts schools.

Fitness KickboxingFitness Kickboxing is a fusion of boxing, martial arts and aerobics usually done rhythmically to music. Offering an intense cross-training and total-body workout it utilizes the training routines used by combat athletes in martial arts, boxing and kickboxing. The objective of Fitness Kickboxing is not to make a “fighter” out of you, but rather to give you a holistic, total-body training program that combines an aerobic workout with the movements and techniques of martial arts. In addition the classes provides strength training benefits because of the “resistance” when punching or kicking the heavy bags and striking pads. However, unlike training in combat sports, there is no physical contact as in sparring. Fitness Kickboxing is offered as a fun and functional alternative to conventional aerobics training for fitness buffs who want a great workout with equally great results.

Unlike a traditional martial arts class, the use of high-energy music adds to your stimulation and motivation. Unlike an aerobics class, there are numerous techniques you can learn beyond the basics to maintain your interest level. Classes go by fast because there is so much going on and so much to learn.

It is recommended that you check with your health-care provider before taking a class if you have not exercised regularly recently, and go in and talk to an instructor and watch part of a class if you have other questions or concerns.

What are the benefits of Fitness Kickboxing?

Fitness Kickboxing classes give you a full body workout and improve your flexibility, coordination, and balance. If you perform the punches with precision and power, you’ll strengthen your upper body and eventually see more muscle definition. Kicks will strengthen your legs. Knee techniques (a strike in which you thrust your bent knee upward) will firm your abdominal muscles; in fact, all of the moves, when done correctly, will make your torso into a solid base that lets you do day-to-day tasks more easily.

Your cardiovascular system will benefit, too. Fitness Kickboxing is a truly aerobic workout – we keep you bobbing, weaving, and jumping amidst the punches and kicks, so that your heart rate stays elevated for most of the session. A good class will leave you drenched in sweat and energized. And your increased conditioning will be accompanied by an increased metabolism meaning you will burn more calories even when you aren’t exercising.

What’s more, a lot of people find Fitness Kickboxing a great way to release stress. The stress relief and the channeling of aggression can be as beneficial as the actual physical workout itself. The physiological difference between this workout and other cardiovascular workouts such as simply running or participating in an aerobics class can’t be explained with the simple “release of endorphines” theory. The high you will experienced after a class usually lasts for hours.  You may find that planting your heel in the torso of a phantom foe 10 or 20 times leaves you feeling wonderfully tranquil.

Who should take a Fitness Kickboxing class?

Although primarily designed for adults, the program provides benefits to teens as well. Student athletes can train in the off season with this workout to condition their bodies for their particular sport. At the high school level, sports are very competitive and training in the off season is a must to prepare for tryouts and the rigors of the sport once you make the team. And the boost in self-confidence also gives a mental edge when it comes to getting more playing time and performing well during actual game conditions. Students who are home-schooled or who do not like to participate in conventional athletic programs can derive health and fitness benefits from this program too.

What should I expect in a Fitness Kickboxing class?

A typical class is 60 minutes. Prior to the class, participants wrap both hands with cloth handwraps to help protect the knuckles and support the wrists. Then with everyone facing the mirror, the instructor leads the group through specific punches and kicks, to the beat of dance-club music. The class starts with a warm-up period, moves to fast shadowboxing and kicking drills, then to heavy bag work and striking pads, and ends with some core-strength building exercises and a cool-down stretch. Intermixed with this are aerobic conditioning drills such as high-knees, squat kicks and jumping jacks.

Be prepared to feel a little clumsy and lost at times – and don’t get down on yourself for it. Even if you’re a highly conditioned runner or you’ve been doing step aerobics for years, these moves may be new to your body. Pay attention to what feels right to you. Don’t do a move that hurts, and take breaks if you feel tired. Your muscles need time to develop their “memory”, and your reactions as the teacher calls out what to do (“jab, cross, hook, roundhouse”) will be slow at first. By the second or third class, the awkwardness will start to dissipate.

What will I learn?

Basic Stance: The first thing you’ll learn is the stance – a way of standing that maximizes balance and puts power behind your moves. Your feet are about shoulder-width apart and at a slight angle, one foot set back from the other. Your fists are up around your cheek-bones to guard your face. (Don’t hunch your shoulders.) This is the position you’ll return to after every punch and kick.

You will also learn how to move, which is important because you use your momentum to generate power. The key to proper movement is agility and staying up on the balls of your feet which enables you to act or respond much more efficiently. The general rule for a powerful strike is to use your body’s weight and momentum.

The punches generally taught are the jab, cross (straight), hook, and uppercut; the kicks will include the front push kick, side kick, back kick, swing kick and round kick. But punches and kicks just don’t come in multiples of one. You will learn kickboxing moves, how the jab sets up the cross, sets up the hook, etc. Each strike sets up the next so you can generate much more power by combos of two or more. The torque of your body helps to create this momentum. The individual moves are worked into swiftly executed combinations (for example: jab, cross punch, hook, uppercut, front push kick).

Different instructors have different takes on what they teach and the subtleties of techniques, but the basics that you learn from one instructor will hold up in all the classes.

What should I wear?

Sweats, shorts and a T-shirt, an aerobic workout outfit, or whatever keeps you comfortable and cool. We conduct classes bare-footed. Barefoot training builds better balance and agility, especially in complex movements that require fast pivoting and footwork.

Could I hurt myself?

Adopt a protective attitude toward your body (think of how much it’s done for you). If you’re not careful, you could end up with a sore elbow, a sprained knee, a pulled hamstring, or one of the injuries that commonly occur in aerobics classes, such as a twisted ankle. When you take your first few classes, tell yourself that your goal is to safely learn the techniques and not to shed five pounds or reshape your body (you can think about those things later).

If you can spare the time, arrive a few minutes early to get your gloves on and warm up by gently stretching your legs (especially the fronts and backs of the thighs) and shoulders. Make sure you are well hydrated.

Be careful to avoid hyperextending your joints. Make sure that you stop the motion of each punch or kick before the joint is fully extended. Also, start out focusing on kicking low and with control. Respect your body’s limits. Sure, you can change those limits but it will take time, dedication, and a realistic attitude.

Will Fitness Kickboxing give me skills to defend myself?

Since you will be working out anyway, learning basic self-defense skills at the same time is an added benefit. Over time you will develop strong kicking and punching abilities and learn the practical application of techniques practiced in the air on the heavy bag. It takes bagwork practice to gauge distance and effectively landing your punch or kick flush on a target. You just can’t just shadow-kickbox, you need the feedback of hitting something. Be aware though that the focus is on fitness conditioning and not on self-defense. If you really want to develop your arsenal of self-defense techniques, take a technical martial arts or self-defense class.

How can I get the most out of the classes?

As with any other exercise, if you want to improve your cardiovascular condition or trim an inch here and there, you’ll have to do it regularly. Two to four sessions a week is probably optimal; in-between classes you can go for a brisk walk or run, do some yoga to increase your flexibility, or simply take a day to rest. Do whatever lets you return to your Fitness Kickboxing class with renewed vigor. Then you can thoroughly enjoy punching out the specter of your malevolent coworker or that driver who refused to let you into the exit lane yesterday.

Balance Martial Arts Teaches Simple, Effective Self-Defense

Balance Martial Arts teaches 2 different types of self-defense. The first one is the physical type- You’ll learn how to look for signs that someone is about to attack and how to deal with the attack. You will improve your strength, flexibility, and overall health. Additionally, you will learn to strike with tremendous power, accuracy and effectiveness. Hopefully, you will never need to fight, but, should the occasion arise, wouldn’t it be good to know how to protect your family or yourself? The second type of self-defense taught at Balance Martial Arts is mental or internal. You’ll learn to how spot danger and avoid dangerous people, places, and activities that could lead to problems. Martial arts lessons can help you learn to avoid the need for a physical altercation altogether. This second type of self-defense is, perhaps, the more valuable of the two.
